There are a couple of ways to start riding!
From the app
- Already purchased a membership?
- Tap the “bikes” icon on the home screen of the Lyft app
- Find a nearby bike
- Tap unlock a bike and scan the QR code on the rear fender
- When the light turns green, the bike is unlocked. Remove it from the station, or if riding an ebike with a cable lock, remove and secure the cable lock into the pink holder.
- Enjoy your ride!
With a Clipper card
See here for full instructions on linking your Bay Wheels membership with your Clipper card.
To unlock a bike, tap your Clipper card on the card reader located on the back of the rear wheel or to the card reader to the right of the bike you want to ride on the dock.
Note: Your Clipper card does not pay for your ride; it only unlocks a bike for use. Payment is deducted from the payment card you have attached on file with your account, no deductions are ever made from your Clipper balance to use Bay Wheels.
As a heads-up, any new, 19-digit Clipper cards will not automatically be compatible with Bay Wheels. As of now, there is no concrete date for when the Next-Generation Clipper will be compatible with Bay Wheels. However, in the future, these new cards will allow you to unlock a Bay Wheels bike
Throttle ebikes
We’re adding a throttle to some of our ebikes! You can use the throttle to engage the e-assist without needing to use the pedals. Just press down on the throttle to get started, and lift the throttle up to disengage. The throttle will also automatically disengage if the right brake lever is used.
The throttle assist can go up to 15mph, and will cost the same as all other ebikes. The throttle will not work when using low assist.
Throttle ebikes can be identified by a decal placed on the throttle, found on the rider’s right handlebar grip.
Using the throttle is not required to ride these bikes - feel free to use pedal assist instead!
